Contact: Larry Hurley, 941-380-3185 or Lhurley918@comcast.net Topic: Who Are the Charlotte County Genealogical Society (CCGS)?
A 12 to 15 minute informative presentation with handouts that gives the evolution of genealogy from a small dedicated group of genealogists and certain religious groups to the second largest hobby in United States. It gives practical information on how to get started and how the Internet has revolutionized genealogical research.
The program also provides a brief history of CCGS and how they are helping beginning and experienced researchers. It is an ideal after-dinner program when time is a limiting factor. (Length of program will vary depending on number of questions) The sizes of the groups are unlimited, but please advise the speaker ahead of time so sufficient handouts are available. Recommended Group Size: Unlimited. The speaker would like an idea of group size so sufficient handouts are available. Area of Presentation: This program is free of charge in Charlotte, De Soto, Glades, Sarasota, Lee and Collier Counties; however a stipend in lieu of travel cost is appreciated. Topic: "Surname Search: Ya Gotta Think Out of the Box" Surnames are the most basic pieces of information about our family. Often the name undergoes changes... some minor, some major...some gradually and some suddenly. If we faily to recognize changes to our ancestor's names, we could look in the right record and fail to recognize the ancestor. We'd like to have a surname spelled exactly the same back through the generations to its 1st bearer. Unfortunately, the bubble bursts when you get into the cold, hard genealogy facts. This lecture takes you through the steps of change and offers suggestions to make surname research a little easier.
